Toronto, ON — April 30, 2025 — The Better Way Alliance (BWA), a national voice for smarter local business policy, congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party of Canada on today’s election results – and extends congratulations to all newly elected Members of Parliament.

With a new government mandate, the Better Way Alliance sees a critical opportunity to strengthen the foundation for locally owned small and medium-sized businesses across Canada.

“Business owners have shown resilience to tariffs and rising costs, but resilience alone isn’t enough,” said Aaron Binder, Director of the Better Way Alliance. “Today, fundamental costs like rent, insurance, and financing – costs businesses rely on to stay stable – are skyrocketing. For businesses to survive, scale, and stay Canadian-owned, we need to bring real cost stability back to brick and mortar businesses.”

Through its Advantage Canada platform, the Better Way Alliance is calling on the federal government to prioritize:

  • Modernizing small business financing to help more entrepreneurs access the capital needed to start, grow, and buy businesses
  • Expanding access to commercial ownership so entrepreneurs can escape volatile rent markets by purchasing storefronts while building long-term equity
  • Stabilizing fixed costs like rent and insurance to reduce Canada’s five- and ten-year business failure rates

Canada’s small and medium-sized businesses face real pressure from rising US tariffs – but many cost challenges they’re experiencing started long before. Volatile rent, soaring insurance premiums, and limited access to affordable financing have been hindering R&D + employee and growth investments for years – and global trade risks are only making them worse.

“Canada can’t afford to treat small business policy like a side project,” said Aaron Binder. “To build a Canada ready to trade with the globe, we need to start treating locally owned businesses as core economic infrastructure – and give them the tools to scale locally, lead nationally, and help Canada thrive globally.”

The Better Way Alliance stands ready to work with Parliament on long-term, people-first solutions that reduce failure rates, expand ownership, and ensure small and medium-sized businesses can grow, hire, and stay rooted in Canadian communities for generations to come.
