Press Release: Art Exhibition Places Cultural Cost of Gentrification in Focus

Art exhibition places cultural cost of gentrification in focus
TORONTO, July 7, 2026 - Hundreds of businesses, gathering places, and neighbourhood landmarks have vanished from Toronto's streetscape to gentrification, redevelopment, and rising commercial rents.
Better Way Alliance and Worth Gallery present Lost Landmarks, an exhibition of more than 35 works documenting this troubling trend. Over 35 works feature The Big Bop, Sneaky Dee's, Gloryhole Doughnuts, and other landmarks the city has lost or is fighting to keep.
The show archives places Toronto and the GTA have lost - against a new push across the region and country to defend local businesses as cultural infrastructure and neighbourhood placemakers.
"Cities grow. But this doesn’t mean accepting mass-displacement of the residents and businesses that build them," says Aaron Binder, Director of the Better Way Alliance.
